, (Belfast is now in Waldo Co., which was established in 1827) - a deed from James Nesmith, his wife Nancy Nesmith, the widow Nancy Nesmith, and Mary L. Nesmith, a single woman, all of Belfast, to Thomas Nesmith, of a tract of land in Belfast, being "Lot No. forty six in he first Division of lots in said Belfast, butted, bounded and described in the records of the original proprietors of said Belfast, with all the buildings standing thereon...containing 100 acres more or less", for which Thomas Nesmith paid 00.
Signed by the 4 Nesmiths, and by 3 witnesses, William Crosby, Jenny Rollings & Ralph C. Johnson. Signed again by William Crosby as Justice of the Peace.
James Nesmith,
(1764-1811), was one of the most prominent residents of Belfast. He owned a store, located at "Nesmith's Corner", from 1799-1809, and died at age 47.
His wife, Nancy Nesmith, was born Nancy Gilmore in 1773. She died in 1842.
RALPH C. JOHNSON
, (1790-1874), was a very wealthy merchant in Belfast, owned several cargo ships. He was a member of the first Maine Legislature in 1820, and served again in 1826, 1827, 1828 & 1837. He was instrumental in forming the County of Waldo (1827), and even proposed the name. When Belfast was incorporated as a City in 1853, he served as its 1st Mayor
William Crosby
, (1770-1852), was the father of William G. Crosby, Governor of Maine, 1853-1855.
Signed on back by "B. Hall", Register of Deeds for Hancock Co. (Bradshaw Hall, 1778-1826, of Castine, Maine, who also served as Treasurer of Hancock Co., and died at age 48).
