    Description

    1839 Letter to Dr. John Ker Sr. of Eastville, Virginia from his son George Ker, who was attending Newtown Academy in Newtown, Connecticut. The letter was hand delivered by Col. John W. Leatherbury, who was had traveled there with David Dunton and was visiting young George Ker at Newtown Academy. Col. John W. Leatherbury lived at Prospect Hill and was a merchant mariner whose trade took him to the West Indies.
    The address portion of letter has a note that reads, “by the politeness of Col. Leatherbury”. The letter was written inside a Newtown Brochure.
