    Description

1863 San Antonio Brewery License William Menger Bexar Clerk Sam Smith Western Brewery.
This 1863 Civil War era license to operate a brewery in San Antonio is very interesting in that it was all handwritten…must have been a shortage of official forms. It was taken out by William A. Menger for his Western Brewery. There is a nice, crisp 158 year old seal that is still affixed. The license was handwritten by Bexar County Clerk Sam Smith.
Samuel S. Smith (1810-1882), pioneer, patriot, soldier, politician, was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He came to San Antonio in 1837 in the very early days of the Republic. He served as mayor pro tem in 1847. He was married to Sarah Brackett and they had at least four children. He was a long Bexar County Clerk and District Clerk. He was a member of the ill-fated Moll and Somervell Expeditions in 1842. He was known as “Big Beard” or “El Barbon.” He was the father of Thad Smith, who served as his deputy clerk for twenty years. We are including a photo of the historical monument at his grave in San Antonio City Cemetery #1.
