RARE EARLY 1844 Letter Sheriff Requests Payment for TWO NEGROES in JailThese documents are from the estate of one of Maryland's early families that settled in this state in the late 1600s, the Simpson family. They first settled in the Anne Arundle county area and later spread to Baltimore and Frederick counties. The family were very successful merchants and business leaders of the era. Included in this families lineage is a link to Wallis Simpson who would become Duchess of Windsor was an American socialite. Her third husband, Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII, abdicated his throne to marry her. As in the past being part of that society they were slave owners. HOWEVER, as you review the documents that will be offered they reflect a different perception of the slaves they owned. Unlike many from this era, this family treated their slaves with more respect and kindness then others. These are very uncommon documents because of their early dates.
Offered is an original short letter measuring approx. 4 x 6 dated Frederick (Maryland) Oct. 10, 1844 Penned on period era paper in typical bold ink. Very good condition with normal folds, easily readable.
